The Center for Policy Analysis (CEPA) organized a mentorship program for investigative journalists in oil and extractives’ transparency from 24th to 27th July, 2019 at Piato Restaurant in Kampala.

With support from GAPP, CEPA carried out six sessions of mentoring the 15 journalists on oil and extractives accountability who were sharpened about the sector.

CEPA sought support from the Natural Resource Governance Institute (NRGI) to implement the mentorship program for the Journalists.

The journalists were engaged in interactive practical sessions of developing content for the stories about the sector.

They committed to publish more investigative stories concerning the sector activities and processes. The journalists were members of the Uganda Parliamentary Press Association who cover and report about Parliament business. They committed to cover committee and plenary proceedings regarding the sector and produce analytical stories to push the policy issues to the policy agenda.

However, it was observed that access to information about the sector is a big impediment to the journalists’ reporting as they noted that some stakeholders were concealing some information.

It was also observed that some journalists fear to publish some stories about the sector. They are also constrained by resources to carry out comprehensive investigations about the sector.

To tackle the above issues, CEPA resolved to establish information resources sourcing from different stakeholders such as Ministry of Energy, Water and Environment, Office of the Auditor General, PPDA among others to ensure that there is thorough reporting about the sector to foster transparency and accountability.
